Tips for Maintaining a Gluten-Free Diet During the School Year

By Brent Westra

Julie Buchholtz, a registered dietitian in pediatrics at Mayo Clinic, discusses tips for helping children maintain their gluten-free diet during the school year.

Among a few of the tips mentioned are:

  • Meet with your child's teacher, coach, or any other school staff they regularly interacts with, and talk to them about your child's dietary needs.
  • Meet with the school's food service supervisor or dietitian to get a better understanding of what foods are available in the school system and help plan for those meals.
  • Create a 504 plan that outlines your child's need to be on a gluten-free diet to help schools accommodate your child's gluten-free diet as best they can.
  • Provide your child's teacher with gluten-free treats so that they may also partake in birthday celebrations or other special events without feeling left out.
  • Play-Doh, paper mâché, and clay may contain gluten, so make sure your child knows to wash their hands afterward so that they don't contaminate their meals.
